Robots are essentially a mix of mechanical parts or hardware and a module that controls the movements often by using a microcontroller. The software program in the microcontroller directs and controls the robot movements.

Here are some of them types of robot hardware:

1) Motor – The motor is the part that translates the programs into action. A robot can make use of many motors to properly coordinate its movement. They are of course, controlled by the robot’s “brain”. Motors have to be properly coordinated in order to ensure the smoothness of motion and the accuracy of the movement. This is often a difficult task to do with precision, as robot has to have the right amount of force applied by the motor.
2) Sensors – If the motors translate programming into motion, sensors translate various stimuli in the environment into codes that the programming of the robot can understand. This type of hardware allows the robot to interact with its environment. Here are some types of sensors:

a) Light sensors – These sensors are often used to detect motion and objects in a robot’s path. This allows the robot to react to various objects that it can scan from a distance. It can also allow the robot to react to various changes in light. Light sensors also used on some robots to control them via infra-red.

b) Sound sensors – This allows robots to track down anything that makes a sound. This hardware also allows robots to follow sound commands. The sound sensors also sometimes take the place of light sensors through the use of sonar detection. Sound sensors are often used in home-type robot pets which interact with people who are using various commands.
c) Touch/pressure sensor – these sensors allows the robot to “feel”. This helps in moderating the amount of force that a robot applies. This can be especially useful if a robot is used to pick up and move fragile objects. Through the use of pressure sensors, a robot can perform the job with the right amount of caution. Touch sensors are also used in various “pet” robots to promote interaction with the owner. Most household robots today can react to petting and holding by the owner.

3) The control module – For simple robots, the control module is done with a transistor based control unit. This control unit, will take one or more inputs, for example from a sound sensor, and translate this stimulus into actions, for example stop when a sound is detected. Although this can be very easy to put together a transistor based control module, their behaviour can not be changed easily. For more complex situations a microcontroller is used as the robot’s heart and brain. Microcontrollers are also referred as the Central processing unit, or CPU. This piece of hardware takes care of possessing the various stimuli gathered by the sensors about its surroundings and turns those stimuli into reactions based on its programming. This is probably the most essential part of the robot since the programming determines the nature of the robot, and that can be changed by replacing the control program in the robot memory.

Robosapien is the first commercially affordable entertainment humanoid robot. It represents a big step in the development of robotics for home and entertainment use. Before the Robosapien, humanoid entertainment robots were produced by companies merely as prototypes and used in the promotion of their technology and business. Humanity has long had different visions of what robots of the future would look like and what they would be capable of. Roboreptile: The Evolution of the Robotic Dinosaur

The Roboreptile is an evolution of WowWee’s famous Roboraptor and Robosapien. It can be called an evolution because although it does share some of the basic technology of the Roboraptor, the Roboreptile is easily a very unique creation. You should be warned, however, that touching the sensor will only produce a positive reaction when the Roboreptile is hooded. At other times, the Roboreptile could get more hostile.

The Roboreptile also has different modes. This is essential in the interaction of robot and owner because of the fact that owners can get easily bored if the robot is too predictable. The default mode is the free roaming mode. In this mode, the Roboreptile roams around the house often looking for food. When it is hungry and in the free roaming mode, it can become very aggressive and will try to track down anything that moves or makes a sound.

There is also the programmable mode which allows you to input your own program into the Roboreptile. This allows you to customize the behavior of your Roboreptile. Da Vinci Robot, Helps Surgeons to Operate Prostate Cancers

Every day we learn how robot technology is used to help us with tasks that are far from trivial.

This robot, named after the famous painter “Leonardo Da Vinci” helps surgeons to reduce the risks of complications to 1/3 to the normal rate.

Da Vinci, has nothing that resembles the humanoid type of robot. Here doctors sit in front of screens and help control the arms of the instruments of the robot that operate the patient.

The difference is in speed and precision that the robot can achieve.

Success rates for operations on cancer of the prostate are vastly improved for
surgeons using a robot called da Vinci.

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has an exhibition of the drawings, manuscripts and models of Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian artist and inventor, now on show. Da Vinci drew a flying machine more than 400 years before the Wright brothers took to the air. He also studied the anatomy of the human body and his anatomical pictures have never been surpassed, even though he left out the prostate: one organ that is essential for the continuation of the human
race.

Robots can do a lot of things, so why not put them to fight against each other?

This idea, born in 1994 with the “Robot Wars” competition that was held in August, at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, California. The idea is to put robots into different competitions, like playing football, the tug of war, and obstacle races, and of course to fight each other.

And in the latest editions new classes where introduced:

  • Fairyweight 150 grams

The house robots are massive pieces and they are not subject to the same limitations as the competing robots, the biggest one, “Mr. Psycho” totaling 750kg of metal gears. That can explain the introduction of much smaller categories into the competitions.

Combat rules:

Each combat will last 3 minutes.
During that time each robot will try to put the opponent out of combat (unable to operate).

The first robot that is unable to move for 30 seconds, because it’s damaged or blocked it is declared KO.
To protect the robots from being heavily damaged the driver can call a “tap-out” to forfeit the match. Once the driver has made the call, a 10 seconds count down is started until the match it stopped. Note that during this period the opponent can still do more damage.

If both robots ended the match, a jury composed of 3 people will distribute a total of 45 points among 3 categories, Strategy, Aggression and Damage. The robot with the higher score wins.
The winner moves on; the loser is eliminated from the tournament.

The Combat Arena

The arena is a steel square of 13m x13m with steel-framed walls and roof protected with thick, bullet proof polycarbonate plastic, designed to protect the drivers, officials, and audience from flying shrapnel and charging robots.
The robots make their entry trough doorways, which are locked until the end of the combat.
The drivers control their machines from outside the sealed arena.

Arena Dangers (partial list)

  • Spinners: Disks in the floor that send a light
    robot flying across the arena. This only affects the lower weight
    categories.
  • Spike Strips: These 30cm long spikes mounted on the
    walls of the arena can cause serious damage if a robot is pushed against
    them.
  • Kill Saws: They are activated by red slots on the
    arena. If a robot drives over one of these slots, a diamond-tipped saw
    blade rises out of the floor, and can tear into the robot wheels and chassis.
  • Ramrods: Six sharp steel spikes that come out of
    the floor. The can damage a robot if the bottom is not protected.
  • Pistons: Pistons, like the Ramrods raise and
    lower from the floor without warning. They are not sharp or fast, they
    don’t do much damage to robots.
  • Hell Raisers: up until season 5, the center of the
    arena was equipped with an hydraulic lift will move sections of the floor
    to a 15-degree tilt.

The arena hazards make fights unpredictable, and tend to reward drivers who avoid the hazards while forcing their opponents to fall into them.

Although this type of competition can be really fun, spending month of time and money to see your creation destroyed in the arena is not for everybody.There are a number of Robotic competitions around where you can take your creations without risking any damage to your creation.

Latest generation of robots are child friendly, but still highly sophisticated.

In the past, robots where very simple toys, that had the ability to spark our imagination. They did not had much intelligence, but we loved them because they where part of the bigger dream of human kind. Most of them where just metal humanoids, that strolled forward while making noises, and sending light beams. Whatever they did, was not important, they where there to take us to the starts.

Today robots are making a come back, and the new generation have taken many forms, from house appliances to dogs, and dinosaurs. They can move, walk, talk, and respond to external inputs, even recognise our voice and understand simple commands.

Choosing a robot toy that goes with the age of the child (and we all have a child inside), is not an easy task. Even if most robots are advertised as suitable for small kids, to exploit all that functionality, will require some time to learn how to program and command the robot. In many cases the task is very similar to training a real dog; it will require repetition, practice, and patience. But the rewards are also there, having your robot dog obeying your command will bring the admirations of anyone..

Choosing the best Robot Toy

While is difficult to know your exact idea of the perfect toy, here you can have some ideas on how to make your selection:

Age of the owner: My son got a Robosapien when he was 8 years old. And even is he was happy with it, most of what he was interested was to play it in demo more. Fortunately this robot is very solid, and has survived almost 2 years, without a mayor scratch. It has also learned to do more tricks during this period. It is important to notice that recent physiological studies shows that smaller kids will take a robot for a living animal, and in some cases they may be scared of that ‘cute’ dinosaur, in the same way a dog may scare them.

Complexity of the controls: Most of them come with a remote control that is the interface to program the robot. As the number of key is limited, sequences of keys are used to access certain functions. This makes the process a little bit more complex, and time consuming. One thing to do is to get a copy of the user manual from the vendor’s site before purchasing your unit. That will give you’re a clear idea on what to except in terms of capabilities and easy of use.
Type of Batteries: Robots in general require a faire amount of energy to operate. Some models come with rechargeable packs, including the recharging unit. Rechargeable batteries are better than normal batteries, but their life is also limited. Make sure that it is possible to get a replacement of the batteries, at a reasonable cost.
Existing Enthusiastic Community: Part of the fun of playing with robots, is finding and joining a user community specific for your chosen robot. A vibrant community is a good sign because it means that the product is good, and that you can learn, and exchange ideas with other fans.

Choosing Your First Robot Kit

Congratulations, you finally decided to take the plunge and build your first robot! Now it is time to search for one that looks challenging enough, but still within your skills.

Deciding for a robot kit, especially if you are a beginner is a difficult task, because there are many options to consider before buying your first kit:

Budget: fix your budget before starting your search. You will be able to find good kits starting at less than 50$, but you can also be tempted to buy one of those highly sophisticated that can cook your dinner for 2 times your monthly pay. The good news is that the entry level kits are good to learn and provide hours of fun.

Experience: do you know the basics of electronics? Can you use a “hot iron”? If you have some experience building or fixing electronics, a soldering robot kit may a good choice. Even if you have never used a “hot iron” before, you can look for the number of parts, and choose one with a low component count; that will reduce the challenges while building the kit. But if soldering is not for you, there are kits that come with the electronic part pre-built, and you just have to do the assembling.

Time available: building your first robot will require some concentration and time. Pick a big project and you may loose interest before finishing, choose something too basic, and you will be bored. The solution to this is to decide in advance how much time you will like to spend to build it. A basic kit can be ready in two to four hours, but a larger kit will take weeks to complete.

Fixing problems will also take considerable time, and that is where your character will be tested. It is very common that after spending hours mounting a robot, it refuses to behave. Troubleshooting is one of the skills that a good robot builder has to master, and is part of the fun if taken as a challenge.

Control logic of the robot: the control logic of a robot is the brain of it. The techniques used to control the robot can be mechanical like the B.E.A.M. robots, using transistors, and for the more complex using their own microcontroller. Transistors kits are still accessible for the beginners, and give the hobbyist a good chance to learn basic electronics principles.

More sophisticated robots use an on board microcontroller, which is programmed to control the functions of the robot.
