Giant Robot Project: Part 40 Frustruating Day ….no seriously… I’m so annoyed.

Ugh. OK… honestly, although I’m frustruated and annoyed, I am still pretty psyched that I’m going to learn a bunch of fcool stuff figuring this out. …I don’t know what stuff, but it’ll be cool!

Ohhh… I’m learning about “Hard start kits” hmmm… interesting…. I wonder how big of one I can get…

  1. @dkeizer05 current …
@dkeizer05 current kills, but it’s the voltage and the load resistance that determines how much current there is. My body is around 500kOhms or so, so touching 12V would create about 24uA … that’s MICRO amps. There’s no way you’d get 15amps through your body from a 12v source unless you turned into copper or something.

I’d really like to see references to your claim that “people have been killed by 9-12v” — maybe from sparks and explosions, but not from electrocution.

  2. So, wait a second, …
So, wait a second, have you measured the doorway and the robot? Because if you haven’t…. 😀 you could be so screwed 🙂

Although remember to measure from between one pair of legs at the body to the end of the leg opposite (a couple legs can straddle the side of the door and swing around and out).

  3. One of the old guys …
One of the old guys in town wants me to bring it to their parade they have every year. 🙂

  4. Dagnabbit! I …
Dagnabbit! I thought it was going to hike the Appalachian Trail…

I really didn’t see this bot strolling off of a wooded mountain. I certainly DO see it stomping around a parking lot as crowds cheer behind caution tape and barricades. I wonder if the sleepy little town in the valley would let you walk it down mainstreet? One robot does not a parade make, but what the heck! It would be the hit of any of our Mardi Gras parades down here! =D

“Throw me some chain mail, Mister!”

  5. I know they’re …
I know they’re related. However they are not the same thing.

If 15 amps of current run through your body, it doesn’t matter whether it went through at 12 volts or 12000 volts, 15 amps of current is running through your body.

  6. I’m not discharging …
I’m not discharging anything more than 80%. That would be stupid. Thanks for the tip, though.

  7. I may need to …
I may need to inform everyone that its a prototype. I’m not about to hop in it, and go flying around the world with bazookas.

The design includes things to compensate for uneven terrain, but I’m just trying to get it walking on flat first.

I spose I could say something about the wright brothers not building a jet right off the bat

  8. amperage is related …
amperage is related to voltage and resistance. I’m not going to lecture about it, but you’re missing some imformation.

  9. Dude, you should …
Dude, you should totally make new t-shirts that say “Giant Robot is jacking itself”.

  10. I don’t know man, …
I don’t know man, people have been shocked on car batteries and telephone wires, and that’s all low voltage. My old college instructor said he knew a guy that was landed in the hospital because he got shocked working on a car battery.

Like I said, it’s the amperage that counts and not the voltage. And by your own admission in the video there is some pretty high wattage on that equipment, unless for some reason it is different for that socket.

  11. You have to …
You have to consider the resistance of the human body. Current equals voltage divided by resistance. You wont feel anything, even with 24V. Maybe you can feel a tiny tingle if you wet yourself with water first. Even if the voltage source can handle 1 gazillion of Amperes. Viva la resistance. 😀

  12. I’d like to see …
I’d like to see some video of the model working over uneven terrain. How well can an 18 foot wide robot navigate those wooded slope?. There may be more infrastructure work ahead, if the robot is to walk off under its own steam.

  13. @localbroadcast

    @localbroadcast

    (I used to broadcast locally…)

If he builds the one on the back of the T-shirt, it can carry the truck out in one piece OVER the trees.

  14. @robertwgardner the …
@robertwgardner the truck will admit inferiority and let the robot be the one carrying the truck out of the woods in pieces.

  15. @JMEMantzel lead …
@JMEMantzel lead acid batteries used in cars are not ment to be discharged more than around 25%. If you discharge them completely, you drastically reduce their lifetime, and soon will stop recharging. Deep cycle lead acid can handle deeper discharge, around 80% or less is recommended. however they do cost more.

  16. @JMEMantzel the …
@JMEMantzel the generator hooked to the batteries while welding wont work. It will try to compensate for the load placed on all the batteries and could never keep up. It will over heat or trip out in seconds right? Charge the batteries to 100% unhook the gen and weld…..Do I have to come by and do this. I said golf cart batteries because they will handle a large draw and recharge for years. A car battery just cant do it. A/H not CCA

  17. around 70mA could …
around 70mA could be fatal, but due to the high resistance in your body you need a very high voltage to get there… 12V is nowhere near enough. If you licked on it, you would certeinly feel it, but likely not die..

  18. Well perhaps you …
Well perhaps you should try that… But make video of it and tell your mate to post it afterward, because it may kill you if it goes through hard, even though it is DC current. dkeizer05 is right =)

  19. 12V doesnt have …
12V doesnt have enough force to push enough electricity through me to do anything.
