Where can I find parts to build a basic robot?

OK, I promised my little sister that I would build her a robot because she is not allowed a pet. I know all about building the circits and programming. The problem is, where do I find the parts? Bearing in mind I can't afford to buy a kit of some kind. I want to make it from scratch using recycled materials or stuff I can get for free.

Does anybody know where I can get the parts from? Or any sites that show detailed instuctions?

What i would do is do a google or yahoo search and find " Build a robot" plans…that will at least tell u what u will need and how to build it….then i would go to ebay or Amazon and buy them from there or see if u have the items around ur community….good luck…

  4. #1 eBay, I am student with no real income, at least till i graduate, and eBay is the sole reason I can accomplish anything. eBay is an excellent source for everything, pretty much, and especially robotic parts. Given you know what you are looking for, your very likely to find the best prices on eBay.

If you looking for free, well that's an efficiency that is VERY hard to achieve, but if your willing to do the work, that is $$millions being thrown away daily. Try a dump, millions of people discard printers, computers, copiers, appliances all of which are loaded with motors, gear trains, circuit components, transistors, etc. SO if you really want to save money, in exchange for the work you would need to scavenge free parts, there lots of stuff out there being tossed

IF you would like to see some of the robotics I have designed, check out my website:

Building things which you can't afford is the most efficient way to do it, limited by your own resourcefulness.

good luck, email me if you are interest in anything else, or have any questions, I'm happy to help other's interested in engineering projects, and furthering their own knowledge.
