Hod Lipson: Robots that are “self-aware”

http://www.ted.com Hod Lipson demonstrates a few of his cool little robots, which have the ability to learn, understand themselves and even self-replicate.

    Anyone know what …
Anyone know what program he used with all those dots? A link would great 🙂

if we would have a …
if we would have a evolution design we will probably end up with a Matrix type of robotics where the robots will succeed our own revolution we should therefor focus on cybernetics rather than pure robotics.

    so what would it …
so what would it take for a machine to really become “self-aware”?

It may not be the …
It may not be the ultimate answer but its a step in the right direction. Robots will eventually be much more useful in rescue missions and unknown territories like Space. Its silly to think that they will take over because they are programed by humans to serve us not serve their own needs.

I think he meant to …
I think he meant to say machines cant self replicate thus evolving over time and coming up with better results…

    these robots wernt …
these robots wernt self aware. to be self aware means you can do what you want to do, all these robots were given a task, and then adapted to achieve that task.

    huh? …
huh? self-replication is a human attribute? everything in the plant, animal and fungi kingdoms reproduce, down to bacteria and viruses that can barely be classified as alive! self-replication at the molecular level is what started it off. man, you’re an idiot. stay off the internet.

    iggy4323: Very. …
iggy4323: Very. People just can’t seem to understand that a robot is nothing more than a series of queries and results. A robot can’t make up new queries. For example, a robot’s motion sensor detects motion, and it asks itself, have i ever seen anything like that before? Then it asks, what is it? And so on, until it can make an accurate decision on what to do. At no point does it just suddenly go, I know! I’ll kill it!

i still don’t see how robots can self-replicate. i think self-replication is a human attribute that robots can never hope to achieve.

That’s genius. I was actually thinking why no one thought about not programming the machines to walk, but letting them learn by themselves! That’s a first step to something really BIG!!

    The human mind is …
The human mind is the most mysterious organ. We have like unlimited memory or w/e, someone needs to create a device that could download information from a secure net(because of pesky hackers lol) and then translate that information which is in binary(which computers can read) into something that our minds can read. We took information that our minds LEARNED from experience and experiments and created the computer and the internet which then we stored all of our information on.

    Stupid is not the …
Stupid is not the word I would choose. If a machine can become trully self aware, why is it not possible to develop emotions or morality as well? I’ll push that further and ask why they couldn’t handle those processes better as well. Not really looking for answers, just offering something to consider.

    ROBOTS CAN’T TAKE …
ROBOTS CAN’T TAKE OVER. See that word? CAN’T. Its that simple. That’s just not how computer programming works in the real world.

    I think the …
I think the solution to this problem is to change ourselves and our world so that labor isn’t a necessity; i.e. virtualize everything or get rid of our physical forms and exist entirely as beings of thought.

    If robots become …
If robots become more self aware, there is a chance that Artificial Intelligence might evolve… without us even realizing it. You might think this is sort of stupid, but the robots we build, it’s like raising a child, except it has no emotions or any sense of moral limitations or values, and because of this, when Robot’s rebel, it won’t be pretty. We should put a limit to what we build, and stop relying upon everything on machinery.
