i would love to see that robot play flight of the bumblebee,if it could do that, it would send violinist all over the world into a state of rage. XD

    It would be better …
It would be better if it did an electric guitar solo, then smashed the guitar on stage.

    Mmm no, a person …
Mmm no, a person would be actively tweaking the music and have direct control over it, you could say the computer/music software itself is the instrument. A robot could not make those same decisions. It would only be able to duplicate what it is programmed to do.

    Sorry misread your …
Sorry misread your post a little bit. You could say Person>Robot>Music Software>Instrument>Music
    Kinda takes all into account.

    Person>Robot>Music …
    Person>Robot>Music Software>Music.

I see nothing wrong with that transition. Just think
    Person>Computer>Music Software>Music
Pretty much says the same thing. Computers and robots just use different hardware.

    I’m not saying …
I’m not saying there was no passion put into making the robot, or that passion put into creating something counts for nothing, and I’m definitely not saying there aren’t other forms of expression outside of music. Who knew that?! >_>
I’m saying, that robot is playing plain, emotionless music.

Let me put this in …
Let me put this in a simpler way…
    Person>Instrument>Music
    Person>Music Software>Music
    Person>Robot>Instrument>Music.
If you were to use music software as an argument, you’d have to say,
    Person>Robot>Music Software>Music.
Something IS lost in that transition.

    Programmers aren’t …
Programmers aren’t emotionless: they play the robot, the robot play the violin. 🙂

    tarde o temprano …

    What I’m saying …
What I’m saying isn’t that the robot could replace a performer, I’m saying keep an open mind.
Besides, music isn’t this magical force that can only be brought into form by a guitar. I live with music students studying music production, and most of their work is done with electronic techniques and software. This is just anouther form of that; If you could programme an orchestra effectively, the guy who programmed the robots in that orchestra would be as valid a musician as anyone.

    So, the robot …
So, the robot programmed itself? nobody put there passion into constructing that robot?
And if the passion put into creating something counts for nothing, then the passion used to create electronic music means nothing either.
Besides, this was made as an example of design art, not musical art.
There are forms of expression outside of music, you know.
I see a machine constructed by a person programmed to serve a purpose. Just like a PA, or an Amp, or a piece of musical software, like logic.

    Amazing. Robots …
Amazing. Robots have come so far yet have so far to go. Can’t wait to see what the next ten years will hold for us.

I don’t see what all the fuss on emotion is about. Its like playing a song from your computer. The human writes it and the machine plays it. So if you look at it that way then emotion is present.

    williscool76, the …
williscool76, the examples in your argument don’t even compare to the point you’re trying to prove. For all those things you have listed, there is a PERSON to make music and convey emotion. So what’s the difference between that and a person programming a robot? The ROBOT is using the instrument. The robot is emotionless, it can’t feel what it’s playing. It just plays. Since the robot has no emotion, it can’t give emotion to the music.

    williscool76 … …
williscool76 …when a muscian plays music they play with EMOTION…meaning that they can convey how they are feeling thru the energy of their performance or their facial expressions, the speed with which they play, the way they move about the stage….this robot is NOT conveying emotion, it has no facial expressions to do so but is simply programmed…so stop trying to be so clever to dickwad
