freedroidz ist ein freies Projekt, was Kindern und Jugendlichen Software-Entwicklung beibringen soll. Als Basis dafür verwenden wir Lego Mindstorms und porgrammieren diese mit Hilfe von Lejos in Java. Gleichzeitig lernen die Kinder etwas über freie Software und warum diese sehr wichtig ist.

Dieses Video ist ein kleiner Zusammenschnitt der Ergebnisse eines Schulworkshops den wir im Juli 2010 am Heinrich-von-Zügel Gymnasium veranstaltet haben.

Last Robot Standing, GC 2009

This video from the “Last Robot Standing” competition sponsored by Georgetown College’s (KY) graduate education program. This year, the Back to the Moon 2009 Robot Camp focused on the 40th anniversary of the moon walk and on current and future moon missions. We created robots that would deliver cargo on the moon, clean space garbage from Earth’s orbit, and explore the surface of the moon. Twenty nine campers, four Junior Counselors, and 18 graduate students and classroom teachers participated in the camp this year (a record!) We also enjoyed generous support from the WHAS Crusade for Children program, which made it possible for children with special needs and a Scott County special education teacher to participate in the camp and to take home three robot kits and software to use for school robotics activities. Where should I start on building a robot?

Okay, I understand that as a beginner, I should start off with a kit, but which kit will I gain the most knowledge from? I don’t want a 3-4 hour fun experience that leaves me with a completed $150 robot on my shelf, I want a project that I can really learn from so that I’ll be in the right direction when I start building my next robot. I hope to get a kit that requires lots of work!

I think you don’t need a kit if you can keep the objectives of your first robot simple. I assume you probably do not have the correct tools and supplies, so I think for your first robot you can build it for a couple hundred bucks. Kits are fine, but if you really want to learn how something works then you have to research it, design it, and build it yourself. In fact I think most of the learning for a project like this comes from the planning and design phase rather than construction, which you would totally miss with a kit because there the design is already done. Then the second robot will be easier.
