where can i get some simple robot kits online

Lego Mindstorms is a good start.

The program that comes with it is very basic and if you want to further your control you can move to RobotC for Mindstorms (C programming of the control brick).
The kits are a bit pricey but you get the freedom to build what you want and there are heaps of designs you can try on the ‘net.
