I am a high school Freshman who is really interested in Robotics. By the time I become a junior, I want to be able to build my own robot and compete in BattleBots. However, I am new to robotics, and I do not know what knowlege is needed for robotics. What do I need to know before i start learning about robotics? Where can I get material for building a robot? Is there a good program for learning robotics? Please tell me. Thank you.
Not asking for much, are you (lol…just kidding).
Robotics is THE up-and-coming field for the future, and anything you can learn now will only make it easier for you in the future.
Although you (probably) won’t like this part of the answer, one of the basic things you need to understand for programming is math……the more, the better.
If you are going to design/build your own ‘bot for BattleBots, some shop courses would be good as well….I would recommend Electronics, Sheet Metal and Welding as the core things to study.
If your school offers a course in Mechanical Engineering, take it…or audit a night school course at a local college or university. Take drafting/CAD courses (you want to be able to to draw out your vision before you try and build it).
An often-ignored part of BattleBots is marketing……how much would your local RadioShack (or equivalent) pay to have their logo pasted all over your ‘bot? Especially if you’re a winner……nothing succeeds like success.
Material for your ‘bot can be found almost anywhere…it would depend a lot on your design and robotic capabilities. Surplus stores (army surplus, etc) can be a goldmine of parts.
As far as a ‘program’, I think you’re asking about a course to learn to design control systems (RC controls, etc). Join a local RC club…….they have some very sophisticated stuff out there now for aircraft, and a lot of it can be adaptable for your needs.
Good luck and have fun.
