Interesting Battlebots variations?

I’m trying to find something for my robotics club to work on in a competitive vein, and I was wondering if there are any variations of battlebots out there that are less lethal/expensive and more complex than the standard metal-bashing fest. Any ideas?

Incidentally, the robots involved are going to be autonomous–this is, after all, for a robotics club.

Have you already reviewed and passed on the Robot Fighting League, www.botleague.net ?
Another good resource is to look at the list of supported competitions that are held at robogames, http://www.robogames.net/events.php
