I want to build a robot?

I don’t want to build it from a kit and i don’t know what parts to get or how to arrange them and which bits to connect to different places. If you know of a good site I could look at please include it in your answer

Well, here’s a good starting point:
http://www.boyslife.org/workshop/gismo.pdf

You’ll need adobe acrobat to read it. You can customize it, but the key parts are there and the learning is there.

There are also books available, including this one:

Get an Erector Set. It is the ultimate geek toy.

Scores, perhaps hundreds, of different Erector Set kits have been made over the decades, most famously the "No. 12 1/2" deluxe kit that came with blueprints for the "Mysterious Walking Giant" robot.
    I had a No. 12 1/2" , it was NEATO fun!
