Snake Robot Climbs a Tree

From the Biorobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, a snake robot (Snakebot) demonstrates how it can climb a tree and look around.

Please keep in mind that this robot climbed a specific tree with a specific trunk width about 1 meter off of the ground. The researchers working to design, build and program these robots still have much work to do to get these bots to climb taller trees of various sizes and to navigate over branches and wires.

@fiddrock Can you point me to more information about the installation and the museum? Thanks!

@PsychicTeeth not reckless. certains environments have an on.ly way to study: through robotics. but of course, you’re an hater, i’m not going to waste i’m time arguing with you

@45von “In? real life a robot can’t just roll up the tree…” it just showed in the video that it can.

  4. @45von The video …
@45von The video clearly shows a robot that “just roll[s] up the tree” …in real life.
If a particular type tree happens to have branches that inhibit the robots motion, then I guess it couldn’t climb that type of tree… that seems fairly obvious. What is your point?

This reckless abuse of technology and magic will eventually destroy us all.

  6. Hugging the tree …
Hugging the tree and then rolling up it would STOP … If there were any branches.
In real life a robot can’t just roll up the tree…

Also, the tree bark is falling off. That’d be a lot of effort for blue screen shenanigans. It’s real.

What will a future Adam and Eve have say when this “creature” convinces them to eat the apple?

@ablestmage – Check out the unedited clips I put up today. I promise no blue or green screens were used. Just a nice HD camera.

  13. The tree-climing …
The tree-climing scene beginning around 00:47 looks fake somehow, like with a bluescreen or something. Nice idea though. Maybe we could make giant ones and put mini nuke reactors in them to power them without a cord. Beetlejuice would be proud.

  14. @Harmonproductions …
@Harmonproductions you’re right! it must be cool if there’s no string attached, somehow, it can be used in operation surveylance…
