ABB Robotics – Folding Metal Sheets (Press Brake Tending)

Vik Industrier of Norway make large metal facade panels for buildings. They wanted to increase flexibility in their pressing & forming operations and have installed a URSVIKEN folding machine controlled by an ABB robot. The metal sheets are up to 4m long and 1m wide & required two operators to lift them. Now the robot safely feeds the machine & also controls the press as a remote 7th axis. This means the total system can now be programmed & simulated off line using ABB’s RobotStudio software. To further utilize the robot’s flexibility it is equiped with a tool changer that allows it to place pre-prepared tooling into the forming machine thereby reducing downtime.
