David Hanson is the founder and CEO of Hanson Robotics — a company that aims to create robots as socially adept as any human being. Through his organization, he has seen the success of robotic facial hardware that establishes eye contact, recognizes faces and carries out natural spoken conversation. Hanson hopes these robotic faces prove useful to cognitive science and psychology, and to the entertainment industry. A former Walt Disney Imagineer, this young entrepreneur and roboticist has been labeled a genius by both PC Magazine and WIRED, and has earned awards from NASA, NSF and Cooper Hewitt Design.

If Hanson succeeds, he will create a socially intelligent robot that may even one day have a place in the human family. Hanson is also a speaker for TED 2009.

“This moment is the Kitty Hawk of androids. We’re seeing the arrival of conversational robots that can walk in our world. It’s a golden age of invention.” –David Hanson, in TIME.

    Robots wouldn’t …
Robots wouldn’t have species, so we would still be the? dominant species.

    i wonder if being …
i wonder if being superior in intellect to a human is necessarily more beneficent than a human. or? will a darwinian function be inherent. Are we really ready to NOT be the dominant species on the planet?

    The lecture is …
The lecture is built on an unverified assumption that we like human like robots. Human like robots are creepy.
A more interesting topic? is the intellect of robots. At this stage of their development it absolutely does not matter how they look.

    Oh, robot masters! …
Oh, robot masters! What can I do? to appease you? I don’t want to be mechanically separated… from my life! :'(

    I? wonder if …
I? wonder if someone, or some organization, could craft a robot that hates humanity and whose only purpose… IS TO KILL!! Nah… I’m sure the armed forces wouldn’t have any use for this technology! I’m just over thinking… Haha… Maybe… I should reinforce my basement and start learning how to re-program robots, just in case. O_O’
